That said, formal credentialing (discussed below) requires meeting strict training and certification standards.

Vascular Sonography

Vascular sonography focuses on imaging blood vessels—both arteries and veins—to assess structure (stenosis, occlusion, aneurysm), blood flow (hemodynamics), vascular wall pathology, and sometimes related organ perfusion. The field is divided into three main study areas:

  • Arterial studies
  • Venous studies
  • Cerebrovascular studies

  • RMSK® (Registered in Musculoskeletal® Sonography): For clinicians specializing in MSK ultrasound.
  • RPVI® (Registered Physician in Vascular Interpretation®): For clinicians interpreting vascular ultrasound studies.

APCA also values and recognizes additional accreditations, such as the American Board of Vascular Medicine (ABVM) examinations (Vascular Medicine and Endovascular Medicine) and international equivalents like RPVI-China (Registered Physician in Vascular Interpretation in China).

  • Candidates must be an approved healthcare professional (MD, DO, DPM, MBBS, DC, NP, PA, DPT, or PT with relevant clinical experience).
  • For RMSK, applicants must have performed at least 500 clinical diagnostic MSK ultrasound studies over a minimum of 6 months.
  • For RPVI, applicants must have interpreted 500 vascular cases within the past 36 months, for at least 1 month. Of these, at least 400 must be clinical diagnostic cases, and they must represent a variety of vascular imaging areas.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics,  employment of diagnostic medical sonographers is projected to grow by around 13% from 2024 to 2034, a rate much faster than the average for all occupations. 

  • Key Drivers: This trend is mirrored in many other regions due to wider adoption of point-of-care ultrasound and a clinical shift towards non-invasive diagnostic imaging.
  • Vascular Demand: Driven primarily by an aging population with a high prevalence of diabetes and peripheral arterial disease (PAD), and the critical need for dialysis access management. The requirement for stat DVT ruling makes vascular sonography a 24/7 service in many hospitals.

For both MSK and vascular applications, a high-frequency linear transducer (7–12 MHz or higher) is generally preferred, as it provides superior spatial resolution for superficial structures and vessels. Exceptions include deeper studies—such as abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) screening, renal artery duplex, or hip muscle evaluation—where lower-frequency or curved probes may be required.
