Key Features to Look for in Handheld Ultrasounds
A study from the University of Texas Health in 2022 pointed out the top things ultrasound operators care about: image quality, ease of use, portability, cost-effectiveness, and probe compatibility. These are all critical factors, but there are a few more you’ll want to consider—especially if you’re new to the field and want to sidestep technical headaches. Let’s break down the must-haves:
- Subscription-Based Services: With proprietary software becoming the norm, some manufacturers now lock key features—such as advanced imaging modes or cloud storage—behind subscription plans. These fees can add up over time. Make sure to check what’s included and what might cost extra later on.
- Size and Weight: Since portability is key, make sure the scanner is lightweight and compact enough for easy transport between locations. For example, the iPhone 16 Pro Max weighs 227g. If you’ll be using your ultrasound for a while, think about whether a device heavier than that might get tiring to hold. You don’t want something too bulky, especially if you’re on the move a lot.
- Maintenance and Warranty: Affordability isn’t just about the upfront cost—it extends to how much you’ll spend keeping your device running smoothly. Look for devices with comprehensive warranties, ideally covering at least 2-3 years, including parts, labor, and technical support. Maintenance plans should include access to authorized service centers and discounted rates on repairs or replacements. Good brands will also throw in free software updates, so your device stays up-to-date with the latest tech.
Remember, a good warranty and maintenance package not only protects your investment but also reflects the manufacturer’s confidence in their product’s quality and durability.
10 Budget-Friendly Handheld Ultrasound Scanners
Here are the top 10 affordable multipurpose ultrasound scanners on a decent budget.
1. TodoPocus™ D3-Ultra Perfect for Every Scan
With convex, phased, and linear probes combined in one, this device is like having a miniaturized ultrasound machine in your pocket—capable of handling full-body scans that you’d typically expect only from top-tier models. The linear probe’s 7.5 MHz to 10 MHz frequency is perfect for detailed superficial exams, while the convex and phased probes handle deeper imaging at 3.2 MHz and 5.0 MHz. More features like preset body markings and automated measurements save time, and multiple display modes ensure flexibility for various clinical applications.
The device weights only 200g (lighter than iPhone 16pro max), which is fully portable. The D3-Ultra connects to your phone, tablet, or other devices via Wi-Fi, delivering real-time scan data at your fingertips. But what truly sets it apart is the no-nonsense approach from the manufacturer—no hidden subscriptions, no surprise fees, just a straightforward purchase with lifetime software updates included. Plus, the three-year warranty and after-sales support offer peace of mind.
Durability-wise, it’s built to last and comes with a secure metal case for easy carrying wherever you need it. Overall, it’s a fantastic value and a game-changer for any ultrasound professional on the go.
- Highlights: Full-body scanning with multipurpose features; wireless connection with propriety app.
- Price: $3,470
2. TodoPocus™ D3L Budget Friendly All-round Choice
The D3L is the smaller sibling to the D3-Ultra, but it’s still a powerful, budget-friendly ultrasound device. It also features a dual-head design with convex, phased, and linear scanners, offering multiple frequency ranges, scan angles, and display modes.
The key difference lies in the number of elements—this model features 128, compared to the D3-Ultra’s 192. While fewer elements mean slightly less detail in imaging, it still delivers crystal-clear results for most clinical applications, from thyroid and vascular imaging to obstetrics and cardiac exams.
Like its counterpart, the D3L comes with no hidden subscriptions or fees and a solid three-year warranty, along with bonus features like HIPAA-compliant local storage and seamless Wi-Fi connectivity to your phone or tablet.
- Highlights: Full-body scanning in a budget-friendly package; robust battery life.
- Price: $2,270
3. VScan Air CL
The VScan Air CL is a fully handheld ultrasound device with a convex and linear array in a dual-head design. However, it lacks a phased array, making it unsuitable for cardiac imaging. The device offers an image depth of 24 cm, which, while limited compared to higher-end models, is still sufficient for most routine exams in clinical settings.
It stands out for its portability, with Wi-Fi connectivity that allows for seamless image sharing and cloud-based storage. However, keep in mind that both features come with paid subscriptions, which could add to the long-term cost.
- Highlights: Great image quality; cloud and app integration.
- Drawbacks: Not for cardiac imaging; subscription fees for additional features.
- Price: $4,500 + $430/ Yearly subscription
4. Butterfly iQ+
A popular single-probe solution, the Butterfly iQ+ integrates AI-assisted features that simplify workflows. It supports full-body imaging and syncs well with iOS and Android devices, though not with Windows. However, it requires a wired connection to your phone, which can be a bit of a hassle compared to more mobile-friendly alternatives.
Another important consideration is that many advanced features, like M-mode and B-mode, are locked behind subscription fees, which can add up over time.
- Highlights: Multiple array crystals for comprehensive scanning.
- Drawbacks: Not compatible with laptops or tablets; subscription-based features.
- Price: $3,899 + $420 / Yearly subscription
5. TodoPocus™ L20 Linear Scanner
This high-frequency (16 to 20 MHz) linear array scanner is excellent for pinpoint accuracy in superficial imaging and vascular assessments. It is particularly popular in dermatology and cosmetic applications like PRP treatments and precise facial injections. Additionally, it’s highly effective for lymph node evaluations, musculoskeletal imaging, and small parts assessments.
Like other Todo POCUS devices, the L20 is compact and fully wireless, offering true portability without sacrificing performance. Plus, with a brand warranty and manufacturer support, this scanner combines reliability, ease of use, and mobility, making it an excellent choice for professionals who need both precision and flexibility.
- Highlights: Exceptional superficial imaging quality; simplified case management with DICOM
- Price: Approximately $3,200
6. Clarius PAL HD3
The Clarius PAL HD3 is an ultra-portable, wire-free ultrasound device offering high-quality imaging, ideal for vascular, musculoskeletal, and cardiac exams. But lacking a convex probe, it’s not suitable for deep abdominal scans. The device connects seamlessly with Android and iOS apps via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, and DICOM sharing is cloud-based for easy access.
However, its subscription-based storage plans (for both local and cloud) and short 90-minute battery life could be deal-breakers for some users.
- Highlights: Ideal for vascular and cardiac imaging.
- Drawbacks: Not suitable for deeper chest/abdominal scans; requires a subscription for local and cloud storage.
- Price: $5,990 + $595 / Yearly subscription
7. TodoPocus™ D2T
The D2T is a dedicated transvaginal scanner that excels in both deep abdominal and detailed gynecological and obstetric imaging, with an impressive depth of up to 30.5 cm, matching the performance of leading brands in the field. Its wireless functionality further adds convenience, allowing greater mobility for operators and more comfortable positioning for patients.
This flexibility makes the D2T a great choice for obstetricians, gynecologists, and those specializing in reproductive health. Additional features, such as preset body markings and automated measurements, help ease the learning curve for operators, especially when honing gynecological scanning skills. Overall, the D2T combines ease of use with powerful imaging, making it a standout in its category.
- Highlights: Impressive depth of scan; provides easy probe movement and patient positioning.
- Price: $2,270
8. Philips Lumify C5-2
Philips is a name synonymous with quality, and the Lumify C5-2 lives up to the brand’s reputation for excellent imaging quality. However, it has some trade-offs, like a limited array and wired connectivity. The premium price tag could also be a barrier for small clinics or independent practitioners, especially considering the limited versatility compared to more affordable, fully handheld options.
On the plus side, it supports image sharing to hospital billing systems and DICOM integration, a feature not commonly found in other devices on this list. It’s a great choice for those who prioritize high-quality imaging and need seamless integration with larger hospital systems, but not the best if you’re looking for flexibility on a budget.
- Highlights: Exceptional imaging capabilities but limited application; sharable scans to hospital DICOM.
- Drawbacks: Only deeper imaging; steep price tag.
- Price: $12,027
9. Mindray MX7
The Mindray MX7 is unique in this lineup as it isn’t strictly handheld but rather a compact, clamshell-style portable ultrasound machine. It’s designed for use at the bedside or in clinics, with two probes that cover a range of applications.
What sets it apart is its traditional physical controls, ideal for operators who prefer hands-on knobology over app-based systems. It integrates smoothly with DICOM for clinical archives, making it a solid choice for larger setups. However, the high price point limits its appeal to smaller practices or individual users, making it more suited for hospitals or larger clinics where its capabilities can be fully utilized.
- Highlights: Multi-modality functionality with advanced features.
- Drawbacks: Very high price; not ideal for small practices.
- Price: $19,500

Hi
I find your products interesting. I am part of group of people (Chiredzi Pioneers Action Group Trust-ChiPAG) that wishes to raise funds and purchase a small scanner for pregnant women and donate to a local maternity clinic in Chiredzi, Zimbabwe. The community is poor, but we’ve realized that many rural women are delivering in the dark without knowledge of child sex, or position, etc and cannot afford expensive scans in private clinics.
May i have a quotation for a small manageable scanner which nurses/nurse aides can operate at a clinic without a need for radiologists/radiographers
Hi Francis,
Thank you for reaching out and sharing the incredible work ChiPAG is doing for maternal health in Chiredzi. We would love to help you find the right, easy-to-use scanner for the clinic.
We will be contacting you via email shortly with a quotation and some suitable recommendations. Please keep an eye on your inbox (and spam folder) for an email from support@todopocus.com.
Best regards,
The TodoPocus Team
